"When the opportunity presents itself, it's too late to prepare."

The Toronto Raptors and the Philadelphia 76ers were tied at 90 in game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. There were 4.2 seconds left on the clock. Kawhi Leonard knew exactly what he was going to do…

One of the toughest things about competing in baseball is that it is nonstop. We play every day. This makes it challenging to hold high standards for the way that we prepare on a daily basis.

We have to be able to continuously improve and compete every night. How you sleep, what you eat, workouts, taking care of your body, tactical, technical and mental preparation. They all matter.

It is important to prepare in an elite manner on a daily basis so that you are prepared to take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. We don’t know when we’re going to be on the mound or at the plate in a tie game in the ninth. We don’t know when we might be called up to a higher level. We don’t know when more playing time might suddenly become available.

We do know that if you aren’t preparing to be your best on a daily basis you won’t be in the best position to take advantage of those opportunities that show up.

When the game is on the line, the results are going to be black and white. Somebody is going to win and somebody is going to lose. The challenge is to put yourself in the best position as often as possible to give yourself and your team the best chance of a positive outcome.

Kawhi was ready for his opportunity. His mind was clear, his body was ready, he’d put in the work. He took the ball, drove hard to the right, pulled up and took his shot.

Only you will truly know if you are preparing to the level you need to on a daily basis. Surround yourself with people that will challenge you and push you to reach your goals. When your opportunity shows up… be ready.
